Marathon information
The London Marathon is one of six world-class running events in the World Marathon Majors series, a dream event for runners worldwide. It is one of the world’s most popular running events, first organized in 1981 by British athletes Chris Brasher and John Disley, and held annually in London in April.
For 2026, over 900,000 registrants have registered, setting a new all-time record and reflecting the continued growth in interest in the event. The race continues to attract world-class runners, particularly Eliud Kipchoge, the fastest marathoner of the modern era, who aims to return for a sixth race to extend his impressive record at the track.

Get to know the London Marathon route
The London Marathon course is mostly flat, with some hills and slopes, but nothing too steep. Overall, the course is easy to run, allowing runners to maintain a steady pace throughout the distance.
The starting point is Blackheath – Greenwich Park. The first part of the course is relatively flat, with slight hills and gradually dipping between kilometers 3 and 4.
The runners’ route from all starting points converges around kilometer 5, and from here, the course continues relatively flat through Charlton and Woolwich, old towns along the Thames.
At kilometer 10, the historic sailing ship, the Cutty Sark, is one of the busiest points on the course. The route then follows the river through Deptford and Rotherhithe to Bermondsey.
The main highlight is kilometer 20, when the run over Tower Bridge, London’s iconic bridge, is filled with cheers from spectators.
Shortly after crossing the bridge, you’ll reach the Half Marathon Checkpoint. From there, the course heads towards Limehouse and Canary Wharf, the city’s major business districts, where the course’s turnaround begins.
The final two kilometers of the course are dotted with iconic British landmarks, including the London Eye, the Palace of Westminster, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben.
The final stretch of the course winds through St James’s Park, onto The Mall, and finishes elegantly in front of Buckingham Palace, the prestigious finish point for the course.
