The Comrades Marathon, also known as the Comrades Marathon, is one of the world’s most prestigious and historic ultramarathons. Held in South Africa since 1921, it attracts runners from all over the world. The route runs between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, covering approximately 89 kilometers, depending on the direction of the route each year.

Founded by World War I veteran Boyd Chapman to honor his fallen comrades, the race focuses on courage, endurance, and friendship, virtues not only inherent in runners but also deeply rooted in the race’s history.

The race is held annually on two alternating routes: the “Up Run”: Durban to Pietermaritzburg, a steep hilly route; the “Down Run”: Pietermaritzburg to Durban, a steep downhill route.

Runners have 12 hours to complete the entire route, with fuel and support stations scattered along the route. In 2025, the race will be a “Down Run,” starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban. Last year’s race was confirmed to be 85.91 kilometers long, making it the shortest course in the history of the Komreich Marathon.
